Being informed about the most common long-term concerns and how they\u2019re treated is key to a longer and healthier life for men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 10\u00a0 of the most common men\u2019s health problems along with statistics and treatments that all men should know about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Heart Disease<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/men.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is fatal for men at higher rates and younger ages than women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Diabetes aggravates other medical conditions, like heart disease, increasing the risk of death. As men are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/mens-health.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to drink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than women and also more likely to binge drink, they are at higher risk for all forms of liver disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol consumption reduce the risk of liver disease and are key to any treatment plan. Medications may be prescribed, depending on the type of liver disease. Hepatitis, for example, is treated with antivirals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/copd-medications\/what-is-chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-copd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a term for any disease that damages the lungs and makes it harder to breathe. The most common COPD diseases are emphysema and chronic bronchitis (sometimes called \u201csmoker\u2019s cough.\u201d) COPD is a progressive disease, which means it becomes worse and more difficult to manage over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5953270\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 9 percent of men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have COPD compared to 6 percent of women. While COPD is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-(copd)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the third leading cause of death worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it also aggravates other health problems, particularly heart disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD is generally treated with preventative measures. It can also be managed with certain classes of medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronchodilators<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methylxanthines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucolytics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cancer<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5.jpeg-2.jpg\" alt=\"Sad man looking out the window\" width=\"512\" height=\"354\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer is the second most prevalent cause of death for men. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/cancer-facts\/cancer-facts-for-men.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common cancers in men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each type of cancer has different risk factors. Many are caused by lifestyle choices, but we can\u2019t protect ourselves from all of them. For example, age is a significant risk factor for prostate cancer, although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23896967\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence is emerging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it\u2019s more common than we realized and less likely to contribute to the cause of death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking is a well-known risk factor for cancer, but in the U.S., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/lung\/nonsmokers\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 to 30 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all lung cancers are diagnosed in nonsmokers, and it appears that nearly a third of those are due to secondhand smoke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though you can\u2019t control all risk factors, the lifestyle choices you make will reduce your overall risk of developing cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment plans depend on the type of cancer you have. In particular, immunotherapy drugs that target specific cells are showing promise for extending life span and improving quality of life. Chemotherapy and radiation are also common treatment options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lung and Airway Infections<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the risks of airway infections. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.cdc.gov\/widgets\/9bhg-hcku?mobile_redirect=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 600,000 men died from COVID in the U.S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. as of December 10th, 2022, according to the CDC, compared to 500,000 women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID aside, any airway infection can potentially be fatal. The most common cause of fatality is pneumonia. Pneumonia is not a specific virus, but a condition caused by a range of microorganisms that cause the lungs to become inflamed and fill with pus or liquid. This makes it difficult for the lungs to function. That same CDC data shows over 300,000 men died of pneumonia in the same time period, with another 7,140 deaths from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/influenza-medications\/what-is-influenza\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another common respiratory virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even non-fatal infections can permanently compromise quality of life. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.03.22.21254057v2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A British study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 20% of those hospitalized for COVID-19 reported a new disability after being discharged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best treatment for pneumonia is medication that prevents or limits infection, usually by killing microorganisms or limiting their ability to reproduce. The correct medication should be used; antibiotics will have no effect on fungi or viruses. Expectorants (cough medicine) and drugs that thin mucus and pus for easier removal can also be effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>HIV\/AIDS<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/6.jpeg-2.jpg\" alt=\"Young man holding a ribbon\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). People with HIV will not necessarily develop AIDS, but men are more likely than women to have HIV, with the rate of new infections in men nearly five times as high as women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the stereotypes, anyone can get HIV, and any HIV infection can develop into AIDS. People at particular risk include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who regularly hires sex workers of any gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intravenous drug users<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men who have sex with men<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condoms and other safer sex methods can help block infection, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is becoming increasingly common. For those who have already been exposed, there are several classes of drugs that slow the progression of AIDS and even reduce the risk of death:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protease inhibitors (PIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fusion inhibitors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CCR5 antagonists<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-attachment inhibitors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Unintentional Injuries<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are more likely than women to die of unintentional injuries, across a number of scenarios. Men accounted for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/topics\/fatality-statistics\/detail\/males-and-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72 percent of all traffic fatalities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020, a number that\u2019s remained consistent in accident data. There are several reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Careers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Men are more likely to choose careers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/housegrail.com\/women-in-construction-statistics\/#1_In_the_US_women_make_up_109_of_all_workers_at_a_construction_site\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">construction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that have a higher incidence of workplace accidents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Age.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Younger men are at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/injury\/wisqars\/pdf\/leading_causes_of_death_by_age_group_2018-508.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest risk of accidents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all kinds, believed to be due to their proclivity for taking more risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exposure.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Men are more often in riskier situations for longer. For example, men historically drive more than women, and the more miles you drive, the higher your risk of a car accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Firearms ownership.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/406238\/stark-gender-gap-gun-ownership-views-gun-laws.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Gallup poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that twice as many men as women own firearms, which raises the chances of accidents.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety training and personal protective equipment (PPE) limit accidents. It\u2019s believed that unreported depression is a major driver of suicide in men \u2014 while women attempt suicide more often, men are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9675500\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to die from it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the complexity of depression, treatment often consists of a combination of approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment modalities for depression can include one or more of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Talk therapy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are several disciplines of talk therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, where individuals learn how to manage negative feelings by engaging with them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medical treatment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Treating a physical disease and improving quality of life often improves depression symptoms as well, if they\u2019re related to the disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medication.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Available for both short-term and long-term use, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/category\/depression-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help manage severe depressive episodes and maintain mental health. When two or more conditions are present in the same person, they are called comorbidities.
