A viruside can destroy infectious agents but are so dangerous to the body that they\u2019re only used externally. In general, antivirals are \u201cnarrow-spectrum,\u201d often so narrow they only work on one type of virus.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Just like antibiotics, viruses can develop resistance to antivirals over time. The other common adamantane antiviral, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/rimantadine.html\">rimantadine<\/a>, was first put on the market in 1993, also targeting influenza A. Amantane drugs are also used to treat acne, diabetes, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Adamantane antivirals prevent replication of the flu virus by binding to specific amino acids in the virus and preventing it from shedding its outer membrane to replicate.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Amantadine is no longer recommended in most situations as an antiviral, as the flu virus has largely developed resistance to it. Rimantadine is also beginning to show resistance to the flu, although it\u2019s still effective against other respiratory viruses and is being researched as a treatment for hepatitis C. It also has fewer and less-severe side effects than amantadine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and Contraindications \u2014 Adamantane Antivirals<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you have liver or kidney disease, only use adamantane antivirals under doctor\u2019s orders and under a doctor\u2019s supervision. As they haven\u2019t been researched for use during pregnancy, these antivirals aren\u2019t recommended for people who are pregnant or considering pregnancy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects \u2014 Adamantane Antivirals<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Common side effects of adamantanes include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\r\n<li>Exhaustion<\/li>\r\n<li>Lightheadedness<\/li>\r\n<li>Insomnia<\/li>\r\n<li>Difficulty with concentration and confusion<\/li>\r\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug Interactions \u2014 Adamantane Antivirals<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and aspirin may inhibit the action of adamantanes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Don\u2019t take a nasal flu vaccine during a course of adamantanes or for 48 hours after you complete the course.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"237\" class=\"wp-image-183 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/holding-a-red-pill.jpeg\" alt=\"Holding a red pill.\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antiviral Interferons<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Interferons are created naturally by the body as a defense mechanism. When a cell is infected, it sends out interferons to alert other cells and help prevent viral spread. Synthetic interferons were developed to target specific viruses, most commonly herpes simplex and hepatitis B and C.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Interferons are also used to treat autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis and some cancers. The two most common antiviral interferons are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/peginterferon-alfa-2a.html\">peginterferon alfa-2a<\/a> (Pegasys) and\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/peginterferon-alfa-2a.html\">peginterferon alfa-2b<\/a> (PegIntron, Sylatron) and can be taken at home via injection.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Due to the risks involved with interferons, they\u2019re generally only used in life-threatening situations or the absence of other options.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and Contraindications \u2014 Antiviral Interferons<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you are sexually active with the possibility of pregnancy, or if you or your partner is pregnant, do not have sex while taking interferons. If you have autoimmune hepatitis or liver damage, do not take interferons.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In addition, interferons may make certain conditions worse. Before taking any interferon, tell your doctor if you\u2019ve ever had any of the following:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Hepatitis B or C<\/li>\r\n<li>HIV\/AIDS<\/li>\r\n<li>Any liver condition or damage<\/li>\r\n<li>Any form of heart or cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure or heart attack<\/li>\r\n<li>Lung disease in any form<\/li>\r\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\r\n<li>Thyroid disorders<\/li>\r\n<li>Colitis<\/li>\r\n<li>Cancer of any type<\/li>\r\n<li>Autoimmune disorders of any form, including rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis<\/li>\r\n<li>Any blood disorder, especially one involving hemoglobin<\/li>\r\n<li>Any condition that requires immunosuppressants, such as an organ transplant<\/li>\r\n<li>Kidney disease<\/li>\r\n<li>High triglycerides<\/li>\r\n<li>Any form of drug addiction\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Any history of mental illness<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Interferons also cause an elevated risk of autoimmune disorders, mood or behavior problems, stroke, and life-threatening infections.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects \u2014 Antiviral Interferons<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Common side effects of interferons include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Fever<\/li>\r\n<li>Chills<\/li>\r\n<li>Headache<\/li>\r\n<li>Muscle and joint pain\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug Interactions \u2014 Antiviral Interferons<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Do not take interferons with any other drug that interacts with the immune system. As interferons can have unexpected effects, carefully review any medications you take with your doctor before starting a course of interferons. It\u2019s also recommended to discontinue any herbal supplements before starting on interferons.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" class=\"wp-image-184 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/medical-doctor-holding-a-pill.jpeg\" alt=\"Medical doctor holding a pill.\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemokine Receptor Antagonists<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Specifically used against HIV infections to slow their spread, chemokine receptor antagonists (CRAs) block the paths HIV takes to get into human cells. Currently, the only one on the market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/maraviroc.html\">maraviroc<\/a> (Selzentry), although several others are in development. Maraviroc can be taken in pill or liquid form.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and Contraindications \u2014 Chemokine Receptor Antagonists<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you have kidney disease, there\u2019s an elevated risk of a drug interaction with chemokine receptor antagonists. Review all medications you\u2019re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, with your doctor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Also tell your provider if you experience any of the following:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Itching or rash<\/li>\r\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\r\n<li>Pain in the upper abdomen or stomach<\/li>\r\n<li>Darker urine<\/li>\r\n<li>Jaundice<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Heart disease and liver disease are also risk factors. CRAs can also compromise your immune system, so review the signs of a new and dangerous infection with your doctor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>See a doctor immediately if you\u2019re feeling lightheaded or feel an intense pain, pressure, or tight feeling in your chest, neck, jaw, or shoulder.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects of Chemokine Receptor Antagonists<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Common short term side effects include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Cold-like symptoms, such as fever or cough<\/li>\r\n<li>Digestive problems, including gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation<\/li>\r\n<li>Rash<\/li>\r\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Over the long term, there may be other rare side effects you should alert your doctor to immediately, particularly in combination.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Any signs of a potentially serious infection, including:\u00a0\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Fever\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Night sweats\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Swollen glands<\/li>\r\n<li>Cold sores<\/li>\r\n<li>Respiratory symptoms like coughing or wheezing<\/li>\r\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\r\n<li>Sudden weight loss<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Trouble speaking or swallowing<\/li>\r\n<li>Balance or eye movement concerns\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Weakness\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>A prickly feeling<\/li>\r\n<li>Swelling in your neck or throat\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Menstrual changes<\/li>\r\n<li>Sexual dysfunction<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug Interactions \u2014 Chemokine Receptor Antagonists<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Do not take any other drug that affects the immune system with a chemokine receptor antagonist. Due to the way these medications work, they may have unexpected interactions with a wide range of drugs, so carefully review everything you take with your doctor before starting a CRA.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" class=\"wp-image-185 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bidrx.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/reading-a-label.jpeg\" alt=\"Reading a label.\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (ISTIs)<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Integrase strand transfer inhibitors block the enzyme integrase, which retroviruses use to change the genome of cells. This limits the spread of the virus. ISTIs are largely used to manage HIV infections, although they\u2019re currently being studied for use on other retroviruses. Common ISTIs include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/dolutegravir.html\">Dolutegravir<\/a> (Tivicay)<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/raltegravir.html\">Raltegravir<\/a> (Isentress)<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/cabotegravir.html\">Cabotegravir<\/a> (Vocabria, Apretude)<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/cons\/elvitegravir.html\">Elvitegravir<\/a> (Vitekta)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and Contraindications \u2014 ISTIs<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>ISTIs can affect blood glucose level, so if you have diabetes or prediabetics, consult with your provider before starting a course of ISTIs. People with liver disease shouldn\u2019t take ISTIs. If you\u2019re pregnant or could become pregnant, you will need to avoid ISTIs for at least the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects \u2014 ISTIs<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Common side effects of ISTIs include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\r\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\r\n<li>Fever<\/li>\r\n<li>Weight gain<\/li>\r\n<li>Insomnia<\/li>\r\n<li>Depression<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you have trouble or pain urinating or another sign of kidney problems, see a doctor immediately.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug Interactions \u2014 ISTIs<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>ISTIs may interact with other retrovirals to cause problems with the kidneys. ISTIs shouldn\u2019t be taken with antiplatelet drugs such as Plavix.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Dosages of some drugs, such as erectile dysfunction medications, antidepressants, and lipid modifier drugs, may need to be adjusted for safety as ISTIs can speed up or slow down their breakdown in the body. These inhibitors block both influenza A and B, unlike other flu drugs that only work against A, and can be used both to treat infections and to prevent them. Typically, three neuraminidase inhibitors are commonly distributed:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/oseltamivir.html\">Oseltamivir<\/a> (Tamiflu)<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/zanamivir.html\">Zanamivir<\/a> (Relenza)<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/peramivir.html\">Peramivir<\/a> (Rapivab)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warnings and Contraindications \u2014 Neuraminidase Inhibitors<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, or swelling of the brain; are immunocompromised; or have a fructose allergy, tell your doctor before taking any NAIs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects &#8211; Neuraminidase Inhibitors<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The most common side effects of NAIs include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\r\n<li>Stomach pain<\/li>\r\n<li>Nosebleeds<\/li>\r\n<li>Headache<\/li>\r\n<li>Fatigue\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drug Interactions \u2014 Neuraminidase Inhibitors<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019ve had a nasal flu vaccine, you\u2019ll need to avoid NAIs until cleared by your doctor, usually 48 hours after receiving the vaccine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As of this writing, there are no documented common interactions between NAIs and other commonly prescribed medications.
